OnePlus is preparing a substantial upgrade for its next flagship, the OnePlus 16, with a focus on performance and battery life. The device is slated to launch first in China on October 12, 2026.
Performance Boost with Next-Gen Chipset
At the heart of the OnePlus 16 will be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset. A leaked teaser image reportedly shows the chipset achieving a benchmark score of around 56,33,288 points, indicating a significant leap in performance compared to the previous generation, according to insider information. This new processor is built on a 2nm-based process, similar to the A20 Pro chipset found in the Apple iPhone 18 Pro.
Larger Battery for Extended Use
Alongside the processor upgrade, OnePlus is also significantly increasing the battery capacity. The OnePlus 16 will pack a 9000mAh silicon-carbon battery, a considerable increase from the 7,300mAh battery in the OnePlus 15. Combined with the efficiency of the 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, this larger battery should deliver improved battery life.
Camera System Gets a Major Overhaul
OnePlus is addressing past criticisms of its camera performance with a substantial hardware upgrade. The OnePlus 16 is expected to feature a 200MP main LUMO sensor, alongside a 50MP periscope telephoto lens offering 3x optical zoom, and a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens with a 116-degree field of view. This represents a major investment in imaging capabilities.
The OnePlus 16 is positioned to compete directly with the Apple iPhone 18 Pro, which currently retails starting at Rs 1,64,900 in India. If OnePlus can offer the new device at a more competitive price point, they may be able to gain market share in the premium smartphone segment in 2026.
