Rising Costs Fuel 4G Phone Revival in India

Despite the ongoing rollout of 5G networks, 4G smartphones are poised for a comeback in India. Counterpoint Research projects a 3% growth in 4G smartphone shipments in 2026, reversing a significant decline seen in the previous year.

Shift Driven by Price Sensitivity

The unexpected resurgence of 4G is primarily attributed to rising component costs, which are making even entry-level 5G devices more expensive. This widening price gap is leading budget-conscious consumers to opt for 4G smartphones that offer a better balance of features for their money. Counterpoint Research notes that 4G smartphones are expected to account for 13% of all smartphone shipments in India in 2026, an increase from 11% in 2025.

Focus on the ₹10,000-₹20,000 Segment

The most significant shift is occurring within the ₹10,000–₹20,000 price segment. The number of brands offering 4G models in this range has dramatically increased, jumping from just two in 2025 to twelve in 2026, according to Counterpoint. This indicates manufacturers are expanding their 4G offerings beyond the ultra-budget category.

Not a Rejection of 5G

This trend doesn’t signal a slowdown in India’s adoption of 5G technology. Instead, 4G is being positioned as a viable alternative for consumers prioritizing features like price, battery life, screen quality, and storage over 5G connectivity. Counterpoint Research anticipates that 4G smartphones will further increase their market share to 15% in 2027, as component costs are not expected to decrease in the near future, maintaining the appeal of 4G options in the budget phone market.
