Apple has introduced iPhone Handoff, a first-of-its-kind feature allowing users to share a single mobile number and plan across two iPhones. This innovation addresses a growing need as more iPhone Pro models, particularly in the US, eliminate physical SIM card slots.
How iPhone Handoff Works
With iPhone Handoff, users with two iPhones running iOS 27 can avoid the need for separate SIM profiles – whether eSIM or physical – to maintain active calling on both devices. The feature dynamically switches the active eSIM between the two iPhones based on which device is currently unlocked and in use. Incoming calls will automatically route to the iPhone most recently used.
When a connection switches, the iPhone will display a “Switched to this iPhone” notification. One iPhone will function as the primary device, retaining control of the mobile plan, while the other serves as a secondary device. Currently, iPhone Handoff is only available in the United States.
Carrier Collaboration is Key
According to TelecomTalk, Apple didn’t develop this feature in isolation. Successful implementation required close collaboration with major US carriers, including T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T. Apple will need similar partnerships with mobile carriers in other countries to expand the availability of iPhone Handoff internationally.
While officially announced by Apple and confirmed to work with the latest iPhones, it is expected to extend beyond the iPhone 18 Pro models to other devices supporting iOS 27, although this hasn’t been definitively verified.
