Nothing Phone (2) owners will not see the Android 17 update, according to a recent explanation from the company’s CEO, Carl Pei. The Phone (2) originally launched in 2023.
Kernel Limitations Halt Android 17 Support
During a Reddit session, Pei stated that the Phone (2)’s kernel is too old to support the new operating system, and the chipset vendor has confirmed this limitation. This means the device has reached the end of its major Android version support, despite Nothing initially promising three years of OS updates.
Pei defended the decision, stating that Nothing has actually exceeded its original commitment by providing four years of OS updates, one year beyond the initial promise. He said the company believes it has been fair, given the clarity around support at the time of purchase. He initially stated the phone had received four updates, but later edited his statement to reflect that it had received three, fulfilling the original commitment.
Continued Security Updates, Future Flagships
While major Android version updates are ending, Nothing will continue to provide Android security patch updates for the Phone (2) until 2027. Users seeking the latest Android features will need to upgrade to newer Nothing devices, such as the Phone (3) or future models.
Looking ahead, Nothing has confirmed it will not release a Phone (4) in 2026, citing rising component costs. The Phone (3) will remain the company’s flagship device until the Phone (4) arrives in 2027, according to the company.
