Apple’s first foray into the foldable smartphone market, the iPhone Duo, will rely on Samsung Display for its inner folding screen. The companies have signed a three-year contract for Samsung to supply the displays, according to reports.
iPhone Duo Display Details
The iPhone Duo, which launched at Rs 2,99,900 for the base model, utilizes Samsung’s M16 OLED material for its inner display. This material was chosen for its superior brightness, power efficiency, and durability – qualities that meet Apple’s stringent standards. The inner folding screen is reported to cost $250, equivalent to approximately Rs 24,000.
While the deal covers the supply of folding panels for the next three years, it’s important to note that this price does not include the cost of the outer display, which will be billed separately. Additionally, the $250 figure represents the panel cost only; repairs will likely incur additional expenses for labour, shipping, and handling.
Why Samsung?
Despite competition from other display manufacturers like LG and BOE, Apple opted for Samsung Display due to concerns regarding reliability and durability. While BOE currently supplies foldable displays to manufacturers like Huawei, Apple has a history of collaboration with Samsung, which has previously provided displays for iPhones and iPads, including the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, at a reported $70 per panel in a joint deal with LG.
Samsung’s M16 OLED technology incorporates advanced features, including multiple layers designed to enhance durability and a hidden front-facing camera, addressing key requirements for a foldable device.
The iPhone Duo is powered by the A20 Pro chipset and features dual rear cameras, along with separate selfie cameras for both the inner and outer displays. Pre-orders are currently being accepted, with shipments scheduled to begin on October 23, 2026.
