OnePlus is shifting its strategy for the Indian market, with the OnePlus 16R 5G now expected to be the company’s next major phone release, according to tipster Yogesh Brar. This comes as indications mount that a launch for the standard OnePlus 16 in India is likely cancelled.
Focus on the Indian Market
The decision appears to be driven by concerns over rising component and RAM costs, which would make the OnePlus 16 prohibitively expensive for many Indian consumers. The company reportedly doesn’t want to “test the depth of the market” with a high-end device in India, where it has been facing challenges. Instead, OnePlus will likely reserve the OnePlus 16 for the Chinese market.
N Series Success Influences Strategy
This shift aligns with OnePlus’s recent focus on its more affordable N series in India. The company launched three devices under the N series this year: the OnePlus N6, OnePlus N6x, and OnePlus N6 Lite, demonstrating a commitment to increasing sales and market share through more accessible pricing. The OnePlus 16R is expected to fall into a price bracket that aligns with current consumer spending on OnePlus devices in India.
Pricing Expectations
While official pricing remains unconfirmed, the OnePlus 16R 5G could be priced around Rs 60,000 when it launches in India, or potentially higher. For comparison, the OnePlus 15R currently retails for Rs 59,999 for a configuration of 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the OnePlus 15 with the same memory and storage configuration is priced at Rs 85,999. The OnePlus 16, had it launched in India, would likely have been even more expensive due to its more powerful chipset.
Neither the OnePlus 16 nor the 16R are expected to arrive in Europe or North America.
