After years of anticipation, Apple Pay has officially launched in India, bringing a new level of convenience and security to mobile payments. The service is debuting in partnership with Axis Bank, with Apple stating it anticipates adding support for additional banks in the coming months.
Initial Availability and Supported Cards
Currently, Apple Pay is available for use with iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch throughout India, and will soon extend to Mac devices. For the initial rollout, only Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards are supported. This allows customers to make contactless payments at thousands of retailers both in physical stores and online, as well as anywhere that accepts Near Field Communication (NFC) transactions.
Enhanced Security and Privacy
Apple is emphasizing the security and privacy features built into Apple Pay. According to Apple, actual card numbers are never stored on the device, on Apple servers, or shared with merchants. The company also claims it does not retain transaction details. Users also have the ability to quickly locate a lost iPhone using the Find My app, or remotely suspend payments from that device.
Setting Up Apple Pay in India
Users in India can set up Apple Pay by adding a card through the latest version of the Axis Bank app. Alternatively, they can add an eligible card directly within the Wallet app on their iPhone by tapping the plus sign and following the on-screen instructions. Once added, the card is ready for immediate use with Apple Pay.
