Apple has begun the global rollout of iOS 27, its latest operating system update for iPhones, starting September 14, 2026, at 10:00 am PT (10:30 pm IST). The update is being deployed in phases, with the iPhone 17 expected to receive it first, followed by other compatible models.
Siri Gets a Major AI Overhaul
The most significant change in iOS 27 is a substantial upgrade to Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence. According to Apple, the new Siri is designed to be more conversational and capable, with deeper integration across the iPhone ecosystem. Apple Intelligence is designed to work more on-device, allowing Siri to access and understand information across all of your iPhone apps.
Users can now ask Siri to perform complex tasks within apps like Messages, Music, and Reminders. For example, you can ask Siri to find photos from a specific trip or add a song you hear to a workout playlist. Siri can even work within the Camera app, identifying objects you point the camera at – such as a flower – on demand, through a dedicated Siri mode.
Liquid Glass Design Refined
iOS 27 also expands on Apple’s Liquid Glass design language. The update introduces the ability to slide between opaque and fully transparent Liquid Glass appearances. Apple says this update addresses bugs that caused controversy with the design in previous iterations, following the release of iOS 26.2.7.
AI Enhancements to the Photos App
The native Photos app receives AI-powered features, including a “Clean Up” tool that allows users to remove unwanted objects from images. More basic tasks, like scheduling meetings or summarising emails, will leverage the on-device AI capabilities. A new “Spatial Reframing” feature lets users dynamically adjust the framing of their photos.
Shortcuts App Made Easier with AI
Apple has revamped the Shortcuts app, making it more accessible with the help of AI. Users can now simply type a description of the shortcut they want to create and how they want it to interact with an app, and Apple’s AI will build the shortcut automatically.

- iOS 27 is compatible with devices ranging from the iPhone SE (Second Generation) to the iPhone 18 Pro.
- The update will also be available for the iPhone Duo foldable model.
